Never Stop Learning

How community classes keep your mind active and engaged

Being a lifelong learner does more than fill your calendar. It can sharpen your memory, learning an instrument, trying something new keeps your brain active. It can also support social wellbeing. According to the AARP, more than half of Americans over age 45 are actively learning new things. Community programs, classes and libraries offer welcoming spaces to explore new interests with others. They bring people together while boosting your long-term brain health.

Check out community programs

Community education programs offer classes for adults of all skill levels. You might find workshops on painting, gardening or financial planning. Many programs also offer fitness classes like yoga or tai chi. Because these classes are local and low cost, they provide a relaxed way to try something new. They’re also a great place to meet neighbors who share your interests.

Sign up for local or virtual classes

Many colleges open their classrooms to older adults through discounted or free courses. For example, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities offers reduced tuition for adults age 62 and older through its senior citizen education program. Online learning has also made lifelong education more flexible than ever. Virtual classes allow you to explore topics like family history, creative writing or computer skills from the comfort of home.

Go to the library

Your local library is more than a place to borrow books. Many libraries host guest speakers, workshops and book clubs. Some even offer hands-on access to tools like printers and musical instruments. If you’re unsure where to begin, ask a librarian. They can help you find classes and resources that match your interests.
