Stay Sun Smart

After a long Minnesotan winter, it’s exciting to finally go on walks and get outside with friends and family. But before you start enjoying the sunshine, it’s important to remember sun safety. Skin changes with age, becoming thinner and more sensitive to UV rays. Taking a few simple steps can help prevent sun damage and lower your risk of skin cancer.

Wear sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher at least 15 to 30 minutes before heading outdoors. Reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

Umbrella

Seek shade and cover up. Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and lightweight long sleeves when possible. Try to limit direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.

Water bottle

Stay hydrated. Warmer weather increases your risk of dehydration. Drinking enough water helps support overall skin health.

Check your skin. Watch for new or changing moles, spots that itch or bleed, or areas that don’t heal. Monthly self-checks can help you notice changes early.

Reminder: If you notice changes in your skin or have concerns about sun exposure, talk with your doctor about screening and prevention options.
