Caring for your gut

Digestive issues like constipation, bloating or general discomfort tend to become more common later in life. If you’re experiencing this, you are far from alone. These changes can be caused by a slower digestive tract, certain medications, or shifts in diet and daily habits. The good news? A few simple changes to your routine can help support a healthy gut and keep things running smoothly.

Simple steps to improve your gut health

  • Eat more fiber: Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains all help keep things moving. Add fiber slowly to avoid gas or bloating, and drink plenty of water to help fiber do its job.
  • Stay active: Regular movement can help stimulate digestion and reduce constipation. Even short walks, gentle stretching and light gardening can go a long way in regulating your gut.
  • Drink enough fluids: Older adults often don’t feel as thirsty, which can lead to dehydration. But your gut needs fluids to work well. Aim for several glasses of water each day, along with other healthy drinks.
  • Listen to your body: Don’t ignore the urge to go. Holding in bowel movements can lead to constipation or discomfort.
  • Know your meds: Some medicines can slow digestion or upset your stomach. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you think your medications may be causing issues.
  • Eat mindfully: Beyond eating a fiber-rich diet, it’s also important to chew your food well and eat at a relaxed pace. This gives your digestive system time to work properly.

When to talk to your doctor

If constipation or other digestive issues are persistent or getting worse, it’s a good idea to check in with your provider. Ongoing symptoms could point to underlying health concerns. Your doctor can help you find relief and rule out anything more serious.
