Prescription drug programs

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota offers a range of prescription drug programs. Available programs depend on your health plan.

Helping you take medicines safely and controlling costs

Step therapy

Step therapy is a process that requires trying another drug that may be more safe, clinically effective and, in some cases, less expensive, before a more expensive drug is approved.

Quantity limits

Quantity limits help control costs and ensure your drugs are prescribed in appropriate amounts.

Prior authorization

Prior authorization is a process to ensure appropriate prescribing and use before a drug will be covered. Coverage may be approved after certain criteria are met.

Specialty drugs

Some conditions are treated with specialty drugs. These are conditions such as multiple sclerosis, hemophilia, hepatitis and rheumatoid arthritis. We've chosen trusted specialty pharmacies to help you get support, convenient home delivery and savings.

Helping you save time

90-day supply

If you have an ongoing prescription, you can save by getting a 90-day supply at once. You can have your drugs delivered to your home or visit a pharmacy in the 90-day supply network.

Home delivery service

Get your prescriptions mailed right to your home with home delivery service. It's easy and convenient.

Additional programs

Get vaccines at a pharmacy

With the retail pharmacy vaccine program, you'll be covered when you go to a pharmacy for a range of common vaccines. It's included with most employer plans.

Preventive drugs

Get coverage for some prescription drugs without needing to meet your health plan deductible first. The preventive drug program is included with some employer plans.

Preventive care for women

Your health insurance typically covers preventive care services and birth control methods. Learn when to schedule screening tests, such as mammograms and pap tests, to help prevent or detect possible health concerns. You can also review the summary of women’s care services covered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and Blue Plus plans.
