Keeping Up With Your Meds
Member: I take several prescriptions each day, but I sometimes lose track of whether I’ve taken a dose or not. If I feel fine, is it okay to miss a dose occasionally? – Janet, Orono
Dr. Aderinkomi: Thank you for your question, Janet. It may not seem like a big deal to miss a dose now and then. But it’s very important to take your medication exactly as prescribed.
Skipping or changing doses without talking to your doctor can make your condition harder to manage, increase your risk for complications and may even lead to hospitalization. You might not feel the effects of a skipped dose right away, but it can become serious over time.
If remembering doses proves challenging, try these tips:
• Tie it to a routine. Take medication at the same time as a daily activity, like after brushing teeth or with morning coffee.
• Use a visual cue. Keep medicines in a safe, visible spot as a reminder.
• Set phone alarms. Timed alerts can keep you on track.
• Use a pill organizer. Weekly or monthly pillboxes can help prevent missed or double doses.
• Enlist a “meds buddy.” A caregiver, family member or friend can check in to help you stay consistent.
• Ask about simplification. Your doctor may be able to reduce the number of daily doses or switch you to combination pills.
• Sign up for automatic refills. A 90-day supply or home delivery can make it easier to stay stocked.
If you’re still having trouble, ask about Medication Therapy Management (MTM). This free, one-on-one service reviews all your medicines and helps you manage any concerns. To qualify, you must have a Part D prescription drug plan with Blue Cross. Call the number on the back of your member ID card to learn more or see if you’re eligible.
If you ever experience side effects that make it hard to stay on track, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. A different medication, dose or even a small lifestyle change like taking it at another time of day or with food may help. Never adjust your prescriptions without checking with your provider first.
Your doctor and pharmacist are your best partners when it comes to making your medications easier and safer to take. Don’t hesitate to reach out if something isn’t working for you.
