Prevention is the Best Protection
Flu season is upon us, and getting vaccinated is one of the easiest ways to protect your health. If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, now is the time. Not only will it help protect you from the flu, but it will also help safeguard those around you — especially the youngest and most vulnerable members of your family.
The flu shot is recommended annually for everyone ages six months and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is particularly important for adults 65+, who are at greater risk of serious complications. Taking simple steps now can help everyone have a healthier, happier winter.
The importance of prevention
As you age, it becomes more difficult for your immune system to fight off infection. The CDC notes that people who are 65 and older are at higher risk of developing flu complications, including pneumonia and hospitalization. Even if you catch the flu, the shot helps your body respond better and can lead to milder symptoms.
A reminder for caregivers
If you are caring for an aging loved one, your flu shot matters, too. Protecting your own health helps you continue caring for those who rely on you. Even if you feel fine, you can spread the flu before symptoms appear. That’s why it’s especially important to stay vigilant during fall and winter, when flu activity is at its peak.
Which flu shot is right for you?
For adults 65 and older, the CDC recommends one of three flu vaccines designed to create a stronger immune response:
High-dose flu vaccine: Contains four times the antigen of a standard flu shot.
Recombinant flu vaccine: Made without using the flu virus or chicken eggs; contains three times the antigen of a standard shot.
Adjuvanted flu vaccine: Includes an added ingredient (adjuvant) to boost immune response.
Talk with your doctor about which option is best for you.
