Renewing your Medical Assistance health coverage

Overview

A renewal is an annual review of your income and other information to see if you and other family members are still eligible for Medical Assistance (MA) or MinnesotaCare.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) stopped its regular renewal process to help Minnesotans on Minnesota Health Care Programs, including Medical Assistance (MA) and MinnesotaCare, keep their health care coverage. Renewals are now restarting.

DHS will use the information they currently have to decide if you or your family member(s) still qualify for coverage. If DHS needs more information from you to make a coverage decision, they will send you a renewal letter in the mail.

Know when to expect your eligibility renewal

Medical Assistance renewals

Renewals for Medical Assistance enrollees take place based on the anniversary month of your application for coverage.

For example, if you applied for Medical Assistance in July, you have a July Medical Assistance renewal. If you are still eligible for coverage, your renewal paperwork will need to be completed, submitted, and processed by your county or tribe by June 30 for your coverage to continue on July 1.

Renewal processes for Medical Assistance will restart in April 2023, beginning with enrollees who have a July renewal.

MinnesotaCare renewals

Renewals for MinnesotaCare coverage will restart beginning in October 2023 for coverage effective Jan. 1, 2024.

What you can do now to prepare for renewal

Update your contact information

Make sure your county or tribal agency have your current mailing address, phone number or other contact information. This will ensure DHS will be able to contact you when it’s time to renew your coverage.

If you are unsure who to call, please refer to the Minnesota tribal and county directory or Health Care Consumer Support line to find the contacts that can assist you.

Check your mail

DHS will mail you a letter about your coverage. This letter will let you know if you need to complete a renewal form to see if you still qualify.

Review your renewal form

Review your form for accuracy when you receive it. If required, complete the form and return it to DHS right away to help avoid a gap in your coverage.

Use these tips to stay aware and safe

  • Be cautious of anyone asking for your personal, medical, and financial information. Government agencies, health insurance providers, and doctors do not call people to ask them for money or personal information. They will never ask you to verify your Social Security, bank account, or credit card number, and they won’t ask you to wire money or pay with a gift card.
  • People who assist you through the renewal process will never ask you for money or pressure you into signing up for a plan.
