# Preventing UTIs

Older adults can be more susceptible to developing urinary tract infections (UTIs). According to the Cleveland Clinic, untreated UTIs can lead to serious complications, including sepsis, a life-threatening reaction to infection that causes inflammation, organ damage and blood clots. That’s why it’s important to understand your risk and take steps to prevent UTIs.

#### Risk Factors

Anyone can get a UTI, but the risk is highest for postmenopausal women. Your chances also go up as you age. The Cleveland Clinic notes that other risk factors include having diabetes, using a catheter or taking certain medications.

#### **Symptoms**

• Burning or pain when you urinate
• Fever
• Nausea
• Fatigue
• Sudden changes in urinary habits
• Pain or pressure in your lower abdomen, pelvis or back

#### **Prevention**

• Empty your bladder fully and often
• Drink plenty of water
• Practice good personal hygiene
• Consider cranberry supplements, D-Mannose or probiotics — ask your doctor if one of these may be helpful for you.
