For providers: Transparency helps members choose care

In a world where people can connect instantly via e-mail, text, phone and Skype to research most products on the web before buying them, it was only a matter of time until there was a demand for increased availability of cost and quality information in the health care industry. The health care reform debate and subsequent legislation has intensified the demand. Further reform legislation has mandated a certain amount of transparency. The individual mandate, if implemented, will bring even further demand for information as individuals who have not historically had access to care will suddenly be in the market.

Tools that provide cost and quality information in the health care industry are becoming standard requirements of health plans. Therefore, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross) in conjunction with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) is now providing our members with the information they need to effectively partner with their doctors and make more informed health care choices. The purpose is not only to give our members the information they need to make decisions, but also to educate them on what is important when shopping for health care.

Types of information

This summer, Blue Cross and BCBSA will integrate into their Find a Doctor tools information on
