Blue Cross challenges Minnesotans to “park healthier”

Shoppers at Southdale, Ridgedale, Eden Prairie and Maplewood Malls encouraged to “Park Away for a Day”

EAGAN, Minn. (August 6, 2012) — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota is rolling out the next piece of its “Today is the day…” campaign at the Southdale, Ridgedale, Eden Prairie and Maplewood Mall parking lots in the Twin Cities. Brightly colored parking spots, delivering the message “Today is the day we burn calories by parking here,” challenge drivers to change their definition of what a “good parking spot” can be.

While the spaces will be up during August, today Blue Cross is asking shoppers to “Park Away for a Day” to incorporate a small lifestyle change that, over time, can make a big impact in a person’s health. The spaces are located at the back of each mall’s parking lot and will add a few more steps to shoppers’ daily activity levels.

“Our studies show that 61 percent of Minnesotans are overweight or obese, and 66 percent of Minnesotans have sedentary jobs,” said Dr. Marc Manley, Blue Cross vice president and chief prevention officer. “People who make small, incremental changes to their behavior, such as parking further out from their destination and walking more, are taking important steps toward a healthier and longer life. We’re encouraging all Minnesotans to be more active in order to promote overall better health.”
