Growing Up Healthy grantees

In 2001, the Blue Cross Foundation issued a statewide Request for Proposals (RFP) to increase access to and use of preventive health and dental care among children from ethnic, minority and foreign-born communities. Out of 118 applicants, nine organizations were awarded Growing Up Healthy grants.

  • Affiliated Community Health Foundation

    $135,000 to develop a school-based youth wellness program for students at Willmar Junior and Senior High Schools and Willmar Alternative Learning Center. (This organization is currently receiving additional funding under the sustainability phase of this program.)

  • Apple Tree Dental

    $109,000 to provide dental care and education at Head Start centers, in Marshall and Worthington, in partnership with Western Community Action and Southwest Minnesota Opportunity Council. (This organization is currently receiving additional funding under the sustainability phase of this program.)

  • Lao Assistance Center of Minnesota

    $188,662 to offer outreach services and to improve access to preventive medical and dental care for Laotian and Hmong youngsters living in North Minneapolis, in partnership with the Southeast Asian Community Council and Pilot City Health Center. (This organization is currently receiving additional funding under the sustainability phase of this program.)

  • MELD

    $102,000 to develop a preventive health curriculum to integrate into the existing program for a 10-week parenting session for teen parents and refugee/immigrant families in the Twin Cities and other MELD sites nationally.

  • Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation

    $107,652 to integrate a preventive dental education and care component into the Way to Grow curriculum and into well-child check-ups for Latino children. (This organization is currently receiving additional funding under the sustainability phase of this program.)

  • Open Door Health Center

    $178,000 to provide culturally, linguistically and age-appropriate preventive care to rural immigrant and refugee youth in South Central Minnesota, working with Community Assistance for Refugees and Region Nine Development Commission. (This organization is currently receiving additional funding under the sustainability phase of this program.)

  • Red Lake Comprehensive Health Services

    $120,000 to provide in-school preventive dental services for children, ages 3 to 14 years old, from the Red Lake Nation in Northwestern Minnesota.

  • Somali Community Resettlement Services

    Two grants totaling $$136,000 to develop and implement a workplan for preventive care outreach and education for Somali families in Olmsted and Steele Counties. (This organization is currently receiving additional funding under the sustainability phase of this program.)

  • The University of Minnesota Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health

    $109,815 to develop a model curriculum to train practicing primary care providers to work more effectively with adolescents, especially teens from immigrant and minority communities. (This organization is currently receiving additional funding under the sustainability phase of this program.)
