Minnesota individual health insurance, what to look for
Looking for an individual health insurance plan in Minnesota? Here are a few things younger people often consider beyond the price quote:
Individual health insurance plans
Get coverage for catastrophic loss
A hospitalization for an injury can quickly add up to many thousands of dollars. If you’re generally healthy, you may want to consider an affordable individual health insurance plan with coverage that begins after, say, a $10,000 deductible.
Health plans with coinsurance or copays can cost less
If you can pay smaller amounts if something happens, plans with coinsurance and/or copays can cost less than ones that don’t have them (coinsurance might be 20 percent, for example, and a copay might be $20)
Network: open or preferred?
An open network means you can see any doctor you wish (though you may pay more for some doctors). A preferred network can mean your costs aren’t covered if you visit a doctor who’s not in the network. Preferred network plans may cost less.
Coverage beyond Minnesota
If you may leave the country, or even the state, look for a health plan that offers coverage – and is recognized – worldwide.
Individual health plans from a name you know
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota offers a range of individual health insurance plans and recently developed a health plan based specifically on the needs of Minnesotans between 20 and 30 years old. The company’s newest product, Simply Blue, even includes a special feature not generally available with other plans: it pays for the first $500 to $1,000 (depending on the option you choose) of care needed. You don’t start paying for care until this amount has been reached each year. This is different from any other plan we offer, where you need to meet a deductible amount (what you pay before the health plan pays).
