Virginia Maki, a Clerical Specialist III in our Virginia, Minnesota, Claims office, is eager to share what she knows as well as learn new skills. She’s a perfect example of a Blue Cross employee, someone combining talent and enthusiasm with friendliness and a focus on service.
“Blue Cross opened this office in Virginia over four years ago. I remember feeling excited when I first saw the job ad. I live in Eveleth and there aren’t many large employers around here. But I’ve always appreciated the opportunities for advancement that come with working for a large employer.
I’ve taken advantage of the additional training and promotions Blue Cross has provided me. Initially, I started as a claims examiner. There are Level I, II, and III examiners, and the same goes for clerical specialists. In the relatively short time I’ve been here, I’ve been able to adjust my position and move ahead.
Most claims work is pretty computer-intense. We use quad-screens here, so you’re juggling four information sources at once. Some people don’t realize that the learning curve is usually 6 months to a year.
What’s really nice about being in claims, though, is that even though most people work intently and independently all day long, you’re among a team that is ready to support you. Help is always available from floor support staff.
You can’t beat the sense of camaraderie and equality you find here. It’s a wonderful work ethic. People are so happy and grateful to have Blue Cross in Virginia, you really feel that across the whole office.”
